Tips for eating Healthy and Working from Home

Hi There!
Hopefully you are staying healthy!!
Due to COVID 19 I have been working from home now for about a week, and am already feeling a bit better now that I have found a routine. One of the things that has helped is maintaining a balanced diet so that I have energy and feel good even though I miss my usual social interaction.
It can be extremely tempting especially with all the uncertainty to order in less healthy food, or snack more than usual due to the proximity to the fridge (especially in my tiny apartment with my desk in the kitchen). I have put together a couple helpful food tips to think about if you are new to working from home or work from home on a regular basis.
Working from Home food tips:
  • Drinks lots of water, especially when you feel like you want a snack. Our bodies sometimes register thirst as hunger and so step one when you want a snack should be to reach for a glass of water. Using fruits/veggies/herbs to flavour water can also help with craving a snack.
  • Keep a routine, set designated times if possible to eat breakfast, lunch, snacks (if needed) and dinner
  • Avoid your non-perishable items when reaching for snacks, aim for veggies, a piece of fruit, or a handful nuts
  • Plan what you are going to eat
  • Make sure your plate is colourful (with vegetables/fruit (like tomatoes)) variety is important
  • Unless you have a gym in your home, and even if you do, you are probably moving less than usual #socialdistancing and so it will help to reduce some of the portions or cut out a snack.
  • Try to minimize coffee intake, don't drink more than you would in the office as it will make you more dehydrated.
#4 in particular is super important for me at least as I find I am even more tempted when I work from home to reach for anything I can get my hands to nimble on since I tend to work longer hours with fewer breaks (plus my desk is in the kitchen). Having a plan helps prevent me from eating the cookies I am rewarding myself. I know what I am going to be having I am more focused (read disciplined) and it forces me to stop working and make time to cook it.
What I do love about working from home meals is that I do not need to meal prep to the same extent giving me more flexibility than I would normally having in thinking about meals for the week! Stay tuned for some fun meal ideas that are easy to make and great for when you are working from home!
What are some of your work from home health tips?
Thanks!
